Siren Concept

After looking at Sophia Kolokouri's work, I was really intrigued to try out an animal/human character. Because I was looking at Egyptian related subjects I decided to look at the kinds of animals within the Gods and Goddesses.

The image to the left is a picture of Horus which has been taken from The Book of the Dead. Horus is one of the most praised Gods and is considered to be one of the most well-renowned protectors of Egypt. As you can see, he has the head of a hawk which is the main thing that influenced the new concept I developed. Before I moved onto looking at Horus, Isis was the first of the Egyptian Gods/Goddesses that I looked at as she has influenced my 'Dancer Concept'. The fact that they're both birds ties in very nicely with one of my most recent posts about Sophia Kolokouri and her image called 'The Lady Bird'. I decided to create a character combining both the hawk features inspired by Horus. The idea of crossing bird with man suddenly brought me over to sirens from Greek Mythology. I thought that this would be a great basis for me to apply The trickster archetype to so I got down to business and this is what I came up with...

I really like this design. The wings are of course drawn from reference to a hawks wings. And instead of keeping her hands on the end rather like a bat or dragon perhaps, I decided to take away the idea of her having hands at all so she's been left with stumps. I think this is quite a quirky spin as the wings seem to give the illusion of arms which was the reason behind this particular pose too. After getting a bit of general feedback from my tutor I also came to find that it holds a resemblance to the characters from the G-Force cartoon as shown below.
References comes as big importance to me so I used a few images to help me draw this character, the main one being the hawk wings. It's one thing to draw wings but it's another to draw wings from a named species. I think one of the main reasons why wings are usually drawn quite plain is because it'd be difficult to animate and such if you pay too much attention to details. Despite that, I still think it's very aesthetically pleasing.

Here are just a few images I collecting when developing this idea.

All the pictures/photographs with the exception to my own sketch do not belong to me.
