Lianna tai is a concept artist currently working for SuperBot Entertainment Inc. She does both character and environment design and I find she's got a really good eye for colour.
The designs for these creatures are just amazing. I really love her use of complimentary colours and contrasting colours. The dashes of red on the right picture really help create focal points on the nose and tail. The splashes of red in the left image remind me of the performance scene in the movie 'Memoirs of a Geisha'.
The shading is also really smooth and soft~ The different tones of blue used on the wolf, especially in the tail remind me so much of the night sky. They just flow and work together so well, curling out into what almost looks like a cloud. To me it resembles ink wash painting, which is a traditional East Asian paint brush technique. A great example of ink wash painting can be seen in the game Okami.
This is one of my favourite pictures and is a good example of Lianna's use of contrasting colours. I think the overall design for this is really creative too~ I love how the tail on her head acts like a hat. The fins fanning out at the bottom really compliments that idea. They could also be interpreted as ears or even a hood. The attention to detail is also very immaculate all the way from the ribbed body to the scales. The scales very faint but just enough for you to get the idea of texture and help it look more realistic. The fins are very beautiful and flowing as well. Despite there not being a background the whole image really gives you a sense of the waves/current of the waters because of the position of the tails and the position of the character itself. A wonderful piece of artwork.
This is one of her environment pieces for a princess' chamber. The colours used in this image has been very well thought out. She's used different tones of purple to bring that femininity across with hints of the royal blue colour. The red carpet of course states royalty and importance. I really like how she's achieved the transparent look on the fabrics with the use of of highlights. It really does give it that luxurious shimmery touch. I might try using that kind of effect for my own work because I have a lot of flowing fabrics.
This is an example of a character design. As you can see she's experimented with different colours and outfit designs. I like the general layout for this picture. I think I might follow by example when I come to do my own concept art. Although she's used the same pose and altered everything else, this might still prove to be a little time consuming for me but we'll see.
